So You Want To Break into Comedy (Or Comedy Clubs) in your City...

The Director Of Clip Tease, Mirage Thrams give some helpful tips she's picked up.

Find Your Comedy Tribe (Or COmedy Clubs)

First things first, you've got to find your comedy community. Whether you're in a major city like LA or a small town where everyone knows your mama, there's always a spot where local comics gather. It might be a grungy dive bar with a mic in the corner or a more polished comedy club. Start by hitting up open mics—these are your gateway into the scene. Don’t worry if the first few don’t go as planned; everyone bombs at some point. It’s all part of the journey.

Hone Your Voice and Material

Now, let’s talk material. Comedy isn’t just about making people laugh; it’s about saying something that matters. My comedy is heavily influenced by my life experiences—growing up in Alaska as a Black woman, my dad’s tragic death, and navigating the wilds of Hollywood. Believe it or not, everything can be something that you use to tell your truth. The difference is the music (platform) you tell your story to. Mine (yours) is comedy. Your story might be different, but it's your unique perspective that’ll set you apart. Don’t shy away from the tough stuff; comedy is often about finding humor in pain. So, dig deep, and don’t be afraid to put your true self out there.

Build Connections, Not Competition

One of the things I’ve learned is that the comedy world can be competitive, but it doesn’t have to be cutthroat. When I with CBS or NBC or Second City or any of the many houses I've been blessed to work with, I saw firsthand how important it is to support your peers. Success in comedy isn’t just about being the funniest person in the room; it's about creating material that no one can question. Your truth is going to resonate with someone else, and that's the JUICE that will help them to feel seen. It’s also about building a community where everyone can thrive. So, lift others up, collaborate, and share the stage when you can. Your success will come from the relationships you build as much as the laughs you get.

Use Social Media Wisely

In today’s world, social media is your best friend. Share your journey, your successes, and yes, even your failures. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter can help you reach a wider audience and connect with other comics. Just remember to keep it authentic—audiences can spot a fake from a mile away.

Stay Persistent

Finally, persistence is key. Comedy is a long game. You’ll have great nights and nights where you question why you ever picked up a mic in the first place. Keep showing up, keep writing, and keep performing. If you’re truly passionate about comedy, that passion will carry you through the tough times.

So, there you have it—your roadmap to breaking into the comedy scene. It’s not easy, but if you’re committed, there’s a place for you on the stage. Remember, comedy isn’t just about jokes; it’s about telling your truth and finding joy in the process. See you out there!
